See you over there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-8321819406287756582013-10-13T22:45:00.000-04:002013-10-13T22:45:37.655-04:00From What I'm Told, Patience is a VirtueThis past weekend was my much anticipated blog workshop to re-do my site. It was awesome! But I'm still not done with the redesign. Basically, I learned how to do a lot of new stuff so now I am working hard using my new skills. The beginnings of carpel tunnel aside, I'm trying to create as fast as I can, but I want the finished product to look awesome so it may be a few days before you hear from me again. There may even be a few days were my site appears broken (this will occur when I forward all the domains to the new one), but don't fear, I will be back some time this week. And it will be good! Not just a newly redesigned blog but the revealing of a special project I had done and other cool stuff.

Stay tuned!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-55796316176683951312013-10-09T11:30:00.000-04:002013-10-09T11:30:03.817-04:00Houseplant Fail, or How Yellow Houseplant Mushrooms Aren't Cute Miniatures I've been working like a crazy dog at all of my day jobs (that plural isn't a mistake) so if it looks like I've been phoning it in here on the blog that would be correct. But I'm working on it. I really like doing this blog so I am attempting to streamline my life in order to make more time for doing the projects and writing the posts that keep this blog interesting.

But what kind of blogger would I be if I didn't occasionally share with you the big fails in my life? Okay, maybe I do that a lot (proof: here and here). Regardless, here is another weird/sort of my fault fail. Beware it's gross.

No that isn't a cute little mini-figurine of a yellow mushroom. Because that is definitely what I thought at first. I had this world class spiral moment where I was like, "OMG someone came into my house and left a little yellow mushroom figurine in my plant that is so sweet! Wait no, that is weird, what if it is like a murderer's calling card? And now he is hiding in my basement and he's going to murder me and this is the only clue and no one will ever know because it's adorable and it totally fits the style of my house and so my murder will be unsolved forever." I think I've been living alone for too long.

So after I calmed myself down (deep breathing and Philip Glass) I googled 'yellow mushrooms in houseplant' and low and behold, it's a thing. Side note: Seriously, what did we do before the internet? I know this is an old thought, but it still blows my mind every time I think about it. I remember getting the internet when I was 12 I just didn't understand it. But if you had this mushroom problem back in the day what would you do? Look in an encyclopedia or ask an old wise person or something?.

Anyway, yellow mushrooms in houseplants is a thing, but not a good thing. It is important to note that I have had this plant for seven years now. I have somehow managed to keep this plant alive for seven years through six moves (two of those halfway across the country), but apparently these past few weeks I've done something to cause major fungus growth. According to this article I read (link: here), yellow houseplant mushrooms can develop overnight due to overwatering, bad soil, old soil, or no drainage. I think, in this case, it is a combination of overwatering and old soil. Lately I've been on a watering rampage which is silly since I've watered that plant once a week for seven years and it's stayed alive but now all of a sudden I'm like this plant needs watered once a week and sprayed twice a week!!! What is wrong with me? Ugh, it seems like my life motto is becoming 'live and learn' which is so lame.

But the good news is, I wasn't murdered by The Yellow Mushroom Murderer and my plant is still alive and de-mushroomed. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-57294270532580910502013-10-07T11:30:00.000-04:002013-10-07T11:30:00.960-04:00Update: DIY Postcard Wall ArtIt's been 10 months since I installed my DIY Postcard Wall Art so I thought an update was in order. If you haven't read the post where I installed it, it was a pretty easy process. But since I was doing something new-to-me I had no idea if it would actually have staying power.

The good news is that it still looks great and I really like it! And thankfully there is no real bad news. The only behind the scenes maintenance I've done is to stick back up a few that have fallen down. Almost all of them were originally stuck on with 3M stickers but I ran out of the stickers towards the end so the rest just got scotch tape. A few months later I added 3M stickers to those without them. The few that have fallen off since have been the ones that only had scotch tape or ones that are on bumpy or cracked parts of the wall (because my walls are plaster there are more imperfections than on drywall).

But a new phenomena occurred this week:

It's been rainy and humid here the past few days so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it but several of the postcards are starting to curl away from the wall. Some of that has to do with the fact that on a lot of the post cards I only put one 3M sticker right in the middle (during installation when I realized I was running low on them I started to only put one on as opposed to two). So some of that would be cured by adding a new sticker. But also, I don't hate it.

Of course, if they all start falling down then it'll be an issue, but until then I sort of like the added texture. That was the whole reason I added foam core the the back of some of them in the first place. It seemed like it would give the look dimension but it ended up not make much of a difference. The curling postcards definitely do give the look more dimension though so I'm happy for now.

Overall, I highly recommend this project! It was extremely cheap to do ($15 for the postcards and around $20 for other materials) for the impact it has and it was very simple and fast (it only took me about two hours to do, way less if you skip the foam mounting part).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-526824233303838752013-10-04T11:00:00.000-04:002013-10-04T11:00:50.097-04:00It's Friday and I Need a 'Scenic View Break'I'm not athletic, by which I mean I am not in shape, by which I mean, well, you get it. My month in Switzerland was amazing (minus one incident involving the word 'sever') but there is one thing about Switzerland that I sort of forgot to prepare for. It's not a flat place, like anywhere. I was literally staying on the side of a mountain. So instead of going 'over there' it was always 'up there' or 'down there'. Since I was born and raised in Indiana my body has been calibrated from birth to be at sea level which made trekking up and down the mountain all day seriously hard work. So I invented the 'Scenic View Break'. It's basically, exactly what is sounds like. I stopped and enjoyed the view while I huffed and puffed. It is also served the purpose of giving me a moment to physic myself up for the rest of my climb.

All that to say is that sometimes in life (cue the Full House moral-moment music) it feels like an uphill climb and there are just days when you need to take a 'Scenic View Break.' That day is today for me. Maybe, like me, you can't take a literal 'Scenic View Break' but you can look at a few of my pictures from Switzerland and lose yourself for a few minutes. Enjoy!
See Scenic View Breaks totally work, right?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-20483387457450761012013-10-02T11:30:00.000-04:002013-10-02T11:30:01.037-04:00Re-Styling and Self-RegulationI have a lot of stuff. I'm no hoarder or anything but I have significantly more than I need (I mean, don't we all?). The problem isn't that I can't get rid of stuff (I'm an excellent purger of things), but instead that I just don't want to get rid of my things. I have really great things. As a compromise (with myself; is that weird?), I decided I could keep all the things I love as long as they extra stuff fits in a small box in my closet. Yes, I have to rotate my <strike>toys</strike> decorative items out like a child.

This is embarrassing, but here is my secret stash:

It's not pretty but on the other side of the wrapping paper is a box full of frames, decorative objects, and other miscellaneous items that I love but don't have space for it right now.

Recently, I noticed that the shelf above my sink and the open shelving above my stove were getting a little cluttered. All my pretty things were getting a little out of hand so I did a little restyling and streamlining.
Most of this stuff just got shuffled, but if you ever see something where before there was something else, you can pretty much guarantee it is from my secret toy box.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-77312697236350138022013-09-30T12:39:00.000-04:002013-09-30T12:39:12.401-04:00Thrift Shop Find, UpdatedRemember how I am a terrible painter? If you missed my last attempt at painting, here are the links Part 1 and Part 2. You should look at them if only to laugh at how bad of a painter I am. The thing that is ridiculous is not that I'm a bad painter because painting is hard, but that I keep trying when I know I'm not good. I've just always loved painting, so it's hard to give up the dream that I could be good too. There is always the hope that next time I'll be better.

So I tried again and my latest attempt was less of a 'major fail' and more of a 'eh' (which is how a lot of my DIY/craft projects turn out).

A few months ago I showed you guys this painting I found at a thrift shop (more about it here):

It was only $2.99! And it's pretty big at about 14" tall and 18" wide. I love a good deal and I also like things that are just slightly ugly. This scene, while quaint, isn't the best painting ever or anything. But when I saw it I really liked the frame and what the scene evoked. I also liked it because I've been wanting to do a 're-painting' project. I've seen a lot of projects lately that take old thrift shop paintings and update them by painting over or accenting the original (examples here, here, and here).

So I did it!

And it looks... eh. It's just so... 'eh'. Why do I keep attempting painting projects??? That is a question that I just can't answer, but swearing off of painting has done me no good in the past so I highly doubt it will make a difference now.

Not sure what I'll do with this painting. For the last few months it's been on my dresser leaning against my Scratch Map so it will probably remain there.

Have you attempted any re-painting projects? I'm a huge fan of them, but apparently they aren't quite as easy as they look.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-18460004111896721192013-09-27T11:30:00.000-04:002013-09-27T11:30:01.074-04:00My TV is a DivaMy TV is way too cool to be sitting on a dresser, or so it's been telling me for the last year. I'm like, TV be cool, there is no need for you to be hanging up on a wall. But I got tired of it's whining so I finally gave in. Last Christmas I asked for a TV mount and I got one. But then it sat next to the TV in it's box for 10 months, whomp whomp.

One of my goals before the home tour (mentioned here) was to get that dang TV hung. I don't really care about TVs hanging or not. I mean, it kind of seems like a guy thing to want the TV hung on the wall, but I had specific reasons for wanting it up off of the dresser.

1) I moved the TV and dresser from the right wall to the left after about 9 months of living here.

I love this set up so much better for many reasons, but the only set back is that in order to see the TV from both couches the TV always has to be at an angle. I'm juuuuust OCD enough that the TV being at an angle drives me insane. For the last year I've been moving it to angle when I'm watching it and then moving it back to a right angle when I'm not watching it. Yeah, I'm weird.

2) As seen above, the TV is resting rather precariously on the DVD player. Every time I moved the TV (which was often, as discussed in #1), the DVD player creaked and groaned and I saw angry dollar signs coming at me so I really wanted to get the TV off of the DVD player as soon as possible.

3) It is a generally known fact that I am running out of wall space so I've been eyeing that blank wall behind the TV for like a year now. So many options! With the TV hung up I could do one of those fancy gallery walls where the TV is incorporated. Or maybe not, I'm about one vintage advertisement away from my house becoming a TGIFridays :/

With so many reasons to hang the TV and the fact that I already owned the wall mount made it a priority before the home tour, except for the fact that I couldn't hang it on my own. My hand is still really weak, oh speaking of my hand, have I showed you my scar yet?

My eyes are not actually as lopsided as they appear in this photo.
It is a combination of a shadow and heterochromia.
But my hand is really that pale.

Pretty gnarly, huh? I actually kind of like it! It's very Harry Potter-ish.

Anyway, with that plus the fact that I'm pretty sure hanging a TV is a two person job I asked my brother and dad to come over help me. I'm so glad I did! Since I have plaster walls there was an added layer of difficulty, but they did a great job!
Now I have this big beautiful blank wall just asking to be covered in art and photos! Or should I leave it blank? I feel torn. In some ways my house is getting overdecorated, but also I don't care and I want to just be myself and I think I may be an overdecorated sort of person. Or maybe I'm a minimalist with a hoarding problem? So many questions!

Seriously, they are amazing. They look great, feel good under my feet, and are easy to clean. If anyone ever asks me how I feel about them, I become a walking infomercial (have you googled 'cork trees' yet? DO. IT. Your mind will be blown). But there was one task leftover from the big install last winter that I never got around to finishing.

This is the threshold between the kitchen and the dining room. While it was installed perfectly and I've never had any problems with it, I never got around to staining it to match the cork.

For some reason I was nervous about staining it, which I soon realized stemmed from my last attempt at staining. If you don't remember, I tried to stain a dresser and it was disastrous (more about that here and here). But after a brief tutorial and pep talk from my friend that helped me install the floors, I was ready to just get it done.
I used my good old Frog Tape (more on my preference for Frog Tape here) to tape off the threshold. Since sanding wasn't necessary, I just put on latex gloves and used an old sock to rub the stain on. I used Minwax in 'Special Walnut', the kind of stain without the poly added in (that was my mistake last time).

My staining coach told me that if I wanted to make the stain darker I should apply the stain, let it dry over night, and then apply another coat. But if you know me at all you know I am the most impatient person on the planet. It's like a real problem, so after a few coats I was done. I left the tape on until the next day optimistically thinking I might do another coat, but the next day I was satisfied with how it looked (or too lazy to stain it again, take your pick).

It's a little thing, but it made me happy for a solid week. The transition looks so great now! I should have done it months ago since it only cost $6 and took 15 minutes. Here is a refresher of what it looked like behind the scenes:
He was all like, "Hey, thanks for putting this special shelf here just for me!" Not cool, Bob. Since the home tour was coming up I had grand plans of making an actual table out of wood for back there, but like a lot of things, it didn't get done. But, I couldn't just leave it like this for the tour so I decided to get creative again.

Though I have more tubs like the bottom ones they were being used elsewhere so I pilfered only the lids and set them on top of the cardboard boxes. Obviously, this is a bandaid to a bigger problem, but you know... it is what it is.

Little known fact about me: I don't use a top sheet. I find them unnecessary so I have like 10 top sheets that I never use so I grabbed two white twin top sheets and folded them over the tubs.

Voila! Not a long term solution but it worked great for the home tour (and beyond, it is still holding up nicely). One day I would like to build a simple table for back there but one day at a time.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-27672109897150031782013-09-20T11:30:00.000-04:002013-09-20T11:30:02.329-04:00Home Tour RecapGuys, the home tour was insane... in a good way! If you are visiting my blog because you were on the tour - WELCOME!

So about that home tour...

I have a lot of dreams, but being on a home tour was never one of them. But when a friend suggested that my house would be great fit for the Irvington Historic Home Tour, I thought, why not? I emailed the board of the Benton House to ask about the application process and before I knew it I was having a home visit that ended with a "we'd love to have you on the tour!" After that I had about four months to plan, which turned to be just that, planning only. What with my month long trip to Switzerland, my unfortunate accident, and subsequent surgery (more on that here), I was happy to just get the house cleaned (you can read about my realistic to-do list here)!

Anyway, enough with the set up. The tour itself was amazing and strange. It ran from 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm so for five hours I stood in my living room welcoming people into my house.

Me, awkwardly being photographed. No joke, my friend had to coach
me on how to smile, that is how much I dislike getting my picture taken.

While I could tell you lots of stories about all the awesome people I met, I'll keep it simple with two lists. First, the phrases I said hundreds of times, and second, the most common questions/comments I heard.

These are the phrases I said about 500 times (which is around how many people came through my house!):
"Hi, I'm Jasmin, welcome to home."
"Thanks for visiting."
"Thank you, I appreciate that."
"Have a nice afternoon."
"That's so nice of you, thank you."
"I have a blog if you want to know more about ______."

These are a few of the questions/comments that I heard A LOT:
"Are you English?" - my response was always, "No, just an anglophile."
"You sure do love to travel."
"You are an avid reader."
"Are you an artist?" - I said, "No, I'm just artist-ic."
"We are soul mates/we should be friends." - I got this comment a lot! It was my favorite comment of course :) Welcome, to all of my new friends!
"Where did you get that chandelier?" - the dining room chandelier was very popular!
"What are those little books on the wall?" - the post card wall art led to a lot of questions.
"Are the floors original?"
"Is that a photo of your grandparents' wedding?"
"Did you take those photos behind the old windows?"
"How long have you lived here?" - Since I've been here for 20 months, I had the weird decision of saying I've lived here for 20 months which makes me sounds like the mother of a toddler or saying a year and a half, I went with "A year and half." or the occasional, "Almost two years."
"How old is the house?"
"Is there a basement?"

Disclaimer: I am a major introvert so the thought of talking with hundreds of people for five hours straight was anxiety inducing to say the least, BUT everyone was so nice and kind that my anxieties quickly vanished. I had a really lovely time and I was happy to meet so many cool people. Special thanks to my Mom, Hayley, Kristen, and Amy for being with me for moral support :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-45133726390867268592013-09-18T11:30:00.000-04:002013-09-18T11:30:01.861-04:00A Gift From JapanSide note: The home tour went amazingly well! I had two students stay with me from Japan a few weeks ago and they were great. Sweet, kind, and came bearing gifts!
Soooo goood right?? While I was grateful that my house came with blinds on every window (seriously, that was amazing), they were all of the $4 vinyl variety. Not my favorite obviously, but they kept sun and people's eyeballs out. That is until Bob systematically destroyed the blinds in the living room. He kept getting his paws caught up in the cords and yanking them down. After buying four new blinds for the living room (it was only $16 but still, they are ugly and I hate buying ugly things as place holders) I said enough was enough and I refused to buy more. When he broke two more a few weeks later I held my ground. And then... well, a year later I still only had two out of four blinds in the living room, but Bob totally learned his lesson.

But, my long game paid off because when I finally decided I had enough money to buy the ones I wanted (it too me a loooong time to decide what I wanted, here is a post about that) they were on sale! $140 later (sounds like a lot but it totally isn't for blinds, trust me on that!) and new blinds were at my house. Of course, it didn't occur to me until after they came that I would have to hang them, boo. Thankfully, they came after my cast came off (oh yeah, my cast is off!!!!) but my wrist was/is still really stiff so I wasn't sure if I could do it myself (drilling is hard for me on a normal day). I asked my brother to help me hang them some time and he said yes, but in typical Jasmin style I randomly decided one day that I couldn't wait another second and that I was going to hang them that moment. And I did! The process required a lot of cursing and two-handed drilling but the end result was totally worth it. Now, let's revel in their glory shall we?

I'm excited, nervous, and I'm already tired thinking about how long I'm going to be standing and schmoozing. But I think it will go well. If you live in the Indianapolis area you should definitely check it out! My house is one of six homes and there are also three buildings. It should be pretty cool. Tickets are available at several Irvington locations (more information here).
Well, you will just have to stay tuned to find out! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-90835015397078375972013-09-11T11:30:00.001-04:002013-09-11T11:30:03.102-04:00Greeting Cards, and Why Little Dressers are the Best*Little known fact, in 2008 when I first heard of Etsy's existence I opened a shop and sold greeting cards. I know, super random right? It didn't last long, but I still have like 30 greeting cards that I made and haven't used. In fact, I have a whole drawer full of greeting cards that I rarely send. So wasteful right? Well, what can you do? The road to wherever is paved with good intentions (or something like that).

I love my little dresser turned nightstand (my semi-failed DIY of it here and here), especially because it has extra storage for the random things I own.

The bottom drawer holds my eclectic stash of greeting cards, a mix of ones I made myself and ones that were purchased.

Do you want to know the most interesting thing about greeting cards? They are completely useless unless sent. Yeah, I know, bummer. But the nice thing is that we live in a world where there are lots of options when you forget your sister's birthday or your cousin's graduation.

Take for example The Greeting Card Shop (check out their ad on the top right!), not only can you buy a card, electronically write a message in it, but they will send it directly to the recipient for only the cost of a stamp. Pretty slick right? Obviously, a homemade or hand written card is more personal, but any card is better than no card when your friend three states away has a baby.

Meanwhile, I'm just over here glad I have a little dresser to hold all of my good intentions.

Previously, the elephant planter was filled with aloe, but after using too much of the aloe (sue me! it's really fun to use your plants for practical things!) the plant all but disappeared.

At this point, I only had one succulent left, so it isn't a big improvement but it is at least a little less empty.

Love this planter, it makes me smile!

So that is the end of my succulent planting saga, I know, it was riveting. Thanks for sticking it out!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-17122246538298518042013-09-05T11:30:00.000-04:002013-09-05T11:30:02.077-04:00New Plants, Part 3 of 4I managed to make 20 succulents stretch into four planters (Part 1 and Part 2) and here is the third one!

I had this little glass dish/jar/bowl (?) from something, maybe a flower arrangement or something? I kept it because it's hard to just throw away a nice glass thing so it's been in the back of a cabinet for a long time. Anyway, I thought it would make a cute little mini-terrarium (its about 6" tall x 5" in diameter).
When I first got the map I tried to only scratch the states I have been to, but it just looks sort of silly since there is no state outlines on the map. Since I needed to add Switzerland and Italy, it was the perfect time to fill in the entire United States (I've been to over half of the states so I think that counts) and Canada.
Side tip: You know all those annoying little tabs on the back of cheap picture frames? Those things that kill your finger pads when you try to lift them? Yeah, those. I use a butter knife to lift those up to save my fingers. It will change your life!
If you are wondering why there isn't a pulled out 'after' shot of this area it's because my room is a hot mess and nobody needs to see that. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-9717601046580732162013-08-30T12:14:00.001-04:002013-08-30T12:14:44.087-04:00New plants, Part 2 of 4If you are anything like me you <strike>sometimes</strike> often buy things that you don't need or have a place for because you just really freakin' want them. Well, that was the case with this brass planter I bought last summer.

It was filled with fake ivy, but I saw it's potential and for only $2 I needed it. Except, that I actually didn't need it. It's floated around my house for the last year. Sometimes it is on the built in shelf in my kitchen cabinets and sometimes it's in the linen closet holding random crap, but the dream was always to put plants in it. It is the perfect size for planting a lot of small plants since it's about 18" long and 5" wide.

So, I finally did it using most of the 20 succulents I bought online (more about that here).

My first step was to get rocks or stones for the bottom of the planter for drainage. I looked at the store but couldn't find any so I went rogue and got rocks from my backyard (have I mentioned my backyard is a mess?).

I really like it! I've seen a lot of planters like this online filled with succulents, actually most of them are just loaded with succulents, but I spread mine out a little because I still had a few other planters I wanted to fill. Now *fingers crossed* that I resist the urge to over water them!

I like how they look and the health benefits I'm told they provide. But my love for houseplants is in no way related to how well I can care for them. I suppose I am better than some since several of my plants have been alive for many years (the oldest is seven years old) but some aren't so lucky. I planted a terrarium (my 'how to' here) about two years ago and since then all but one of the succulents have died. What can you do? Plant new ones, I guess.

I purchased a set of 20 succulents on Amazon. It was weird to buy plants online and even weirder to open a package full of styrofoam peanuts and plants, but it actually worked out great. At big box stores succulents can be $3-4 a piece, but my set of 20 succulents was (including very expensive shipping) $39 which makes each plant $1.90... a pretty good savings! BUT since I have an Amazon rewards card, I had points to put toward the purchase and my total price was only $17! Which makes each succulent only $.85! I got really excited about that, especially since plants are fickle, living things that sometimes die.

Let me start at the beginning. I've been obsessed with this greenhouse from IKEA since I first saw it online a while back (I gushed about it here) but I haven't been to IKEA in about two years so I was satisfied with admiring it from afar. That is until my parents made a trip to IKEA and asked me if they could pick anything up for me. A day later, this baby was in my house (and it was only $19.99!).

Of course, the hitch in the plan was that I was attempting to assemble something from IKEA with my dominant hand in a cast, but dang it if I am not obsessively determined/this thing was actually easy to assemble.

I like that it has three settings:

1) Propped open

I envision it filled with little baby plants and other little objects, but one step at a time. For now, I am just enjoying having a tiny greenhouse on my dining room table.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-77255404805184250032013-08-21T11:30:00.000-04:002013-08-21T11:30:02.556-04:00New Art: Irvington EditionThe home tour is inching closer and in preparation for the tour I got news and a gift. The new is that, despite all the information to the contrary, my house wasn't actually built in 1925... it was built in 1922! How did I come by this info? An Irvington historian told me. Every home on the tour was researched by a historian who gathered as much information about the house as possible. All the information was interesting but the most surprising thing was that my house is three years older than I though. Crazy, huh?

I also got an awesome gift. Every year before the home tour there is a poster contest. As a one of the homeowners on the tour I got a signed copy of the winning print (done by Paula Nicewanger)!
Isn't it lovely? Even better, when I got home I found that the 10"x15" print fit perfectly in a frame I bought for $2 at a yard sale last summer. The frame was a dull wood color so I did a quite spray paint job to make it look a little more modern. If you are wondering how I spray painted something while wearing a cast on my dominate hand, the answer is, my cast now has spray paint on it.

I tend to forget about it but then I do remember it I get excited because of all the cool, cheap stuff. The amazing news is that H&M just launched an online home store! I'm still really excited about it, but since getting back from my trip and my subsequent hand surgery I have lacked the energy/ability to attempt nearly all of the projects I so ambitiously assumed I would get done in time (for the full list click here, but be warned, it is a ridiculously long list). It was, in fact, 18 items long. Yeah... sometimes I really overshoot things. So my new and improved (and much more realistic) list is 4 items long.

1) Replace/Get blinds in the living (currently only two of the four windows have blinds).

2) Hang the TV (I already have the mount).

3) Buy new plants to replace some of mine that are looking sort of sad.

4) Clean, just like, everything.

Bonus items:
* Build sofa table to replace my 'faux' table I created (here).
* Re-grout shower

From the day I get my cast off till the day of the home tour I have 25 days. I'm not sure yet how quickly I'll have full use of my hand after the cast comes off, but I think that completing these four tasks (with the possibility of two extra bonus items) within 25 days is reasonable.

Wish me luck!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14506599993125386523noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-787043408329072616.post-75683667072354338572013-08-08T18:10:00.000-04:002013-08-08T18:10:10.734-04:00A Swiss Souvenir

I've discussed my love of souvenir collecting several times (here and here), but it bears repeating that I love buying things when I'm traveling to bring home and display. My gallery walls are like storyboards of my life so adding things from my travels only makes sense. It all started with my ink and pencil drawing collection but I expanded to other items like a painted feather from Mexico when the right drawing didn't find me. While in Switzerland I couldn't find a drawing I liked but I did find something equally cool.

I'm assuming what I got is considered very touristy in Switzerland but since I live in Indiana and I know very few people who've ever been to Switzerland I don't think too many people will judge me. I decided to place it on the big blank blue wall in my bedroom which is currently awaiting further direction. Until I decide what I want this wall to function as, a little 3M hook makes my new piece temporary eye candy.

Have you ever seen a fabric calendar before? It felt nostalgic to get this piece for several reasons. One, it is a good reminder of my trip (the chalet I stayed in is very similar to the one depicted) and two, my Grandma used to have fabric calendars and she even made me a quilt of them once (which is now in storage because it is threadbare). I especially like all the iconic imagery in black and white, it's graphic while still being sweet and vintage looking. Also, as soon as I saw it I knew it would look insane against my blue wall. Switzerland is surprisingly expensive, but I'm really glad I decided to grab this piece.
